St. Luke the Physician

Jacoby Studios, St. Louis

1945

Given to the glory of God and in loving memory of

Dr. Edward Randall by his wife, Laura Ballinger Randall

The central figure in this window is St. Luke, the Physician, and the lower panel depicts Christ healing the sick.  In the lower portion of the central panel, there are four-leaf clovers and red carnations.  According to members of the Randall family, the clover is a reminder of Hallie, the little daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Randall, who was struck and mortally injured by a horse and carriage while looking for four-leaf clovers on Galveston’s Broadway Esplanade across from the family home.  Dr. Randall particularly loved red carnations.

The stained glass in the church was completed with the installation of this window in 1945.  The inscription reads, “to the glory of God and in loving memory of Edward Randall, M.D., born October 7, 1860, died August 12, 1944."  The words of Luke 8:50 are inscribed in the window, “Fear not, Believe Only, and she will be made whole.”

Dr. Randall was a leading figure in the location of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was the first Medical Director of American National Insurance Corporation.
