The Phoenix Project at Trinity Episcopal Church

History of the Phoenix Project

In 2008, Hurricane Ike roared across Galveston Island, leaving extensive damages to Island structures. Along with flooding damage, a portion of Trinity’s Sealy Memorial window, a stained-glass window over the altar, was damaged by strong winds.

A small section of the lower central panel was damaged and repaired following Hurricane Ike in 2008. The broken shards of stained-glass from the damage were remade into jewelry and other art items, which are sold to benefit the Phoenix Fund, assisting other disaster-affected areas around the world.

The Sealy Memorial Window

The great window over the altar depicts Christ on His throne blessing the little children, and at the base bears the scripture: “In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Designed and created by Tiffany Studios of New York in 1904, it was given by Magnolia Willis Sealy in memory of her husband, George Sealy.
